We are VOPERA, the Virtual Opera Project.

 

Our first production - a new film of Ravel's L'Enfant et les Sortilèges - premièred at 8pm on the London Philharmonic Orchestra Youtube Channel and on Marquee TV.

 

When the pandemic struck, all live performance came crashing to a stop. Musicians, actors, directors, technicians, designers - everyone was faced with an unknown future which could last... who knows how long. 

  

The team at VOPERA decided to do something about it. We couldn't gather in a room to rehearse and perform, so what could we do instead? It was from this thought that our ambitious project began. It involved green screen studios, Zoom coachings halfway around the world, rehearsal tracks, scrapbook designs and a whole lot more to create a production of Ravel's surreal and touching masterpiece.

The film won the 2021 Southbank Sky Arts Award for Opera, and has recently been nominated for the 2021 Royal Philharmonic Society Award in the Opera and Music Theatre category, alongside English National Opera and Opera Holland Park.
